Two Emmy Nominations Recognize the Creative Vision Behind Spiral
At the heart of Spiral is a timely and emotionally relevant subject: the mental health challenges facing college students. Rather than approaching the topic through conventional storytelling, Adria and David developed a collaborative filmmaking experience that brought emerging artists directly into the creative process.
The project originated through Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, where the filmmakers worked alongside students enrolled in the Acting and Filmmaking for Social Change course.
Adria, who wrote the screenplay and co-directed the film, worked closely with students to develop the characters and dialogue, incorporating their perspectives and experiences into the evolving story. David served as co-director, director of photography, and editor, helping bring the project’s artistic vision to life.
The filmmakers emphasized the importance of giving students meaningful creative opportunities, with participants contributing both in front of and behind the camera.
In a recent interview published by Syracuse University, Adria explained the creation of a screenplay that reflected the students’ contributions while ensuring each performer had an opportunity to participate meaningfully.
The resulting film demonstrates how collaborative filmmaking can serve as both an artistic experience and a platform for addressing issues affecting younger generations.
Speaking with Syracuse University’s WAER in 2026, Adria expressed appreciation for the talented students and faculty who helped make the project possible, emphasizing that the nominations represented an achievement for the entire production team.
As the filmmakers celebrate their latest nominations, the recognition also highlights the contributions of the students, faculty, and creative professionals who helped bring Spiral to life.
Regardless of the evening’s outcome, the film’s two Emmy nominations represent a meaningful achievement for Adria Dawn, David Tarleton, and Tarleton/Dawn Productions, reinforcing the power of storytelling to inspire conversations and create lasting impact.
