Film Spotlight: Multi-Talented Filmmaker Bohdan Borysov Turns Reality Into Cinema in “Your Turn”

Avatar

For filmmaker Bohdan Borysov, cinema begins with something  simple: paying attention to the world around him.

An interdisciplinary artist working across directing, cinematography, gaffing, color grading, and photography, Bohdan has developed a creative approach rooted not in making reality look artificial, but in discovering the beauty already present within it. His filmmaking philosophy is built around observation, collaboration, and the belief that even the most ordinary locations can become unforgettable when the right story unfolds inside them.

That philosophy comes to life in Your Turn, Bohdan’s feature directorial debut, currently in post-production. What began as a short proof of concept ultimately grew into a feature film, transforming an idea that once existed in Bohdan’s mind into a collaborative production involving nearly 30 people working together to bring his vision to the screen.

For Bohdan, Your Turn is more than a milestone. It represents the meeting point of everything that has shaped him as an artist — his eye for cinematography, his technical understanding of production, his instinct for storytelling, and his belief that filmmaking becomes most powerful when everyone involved feels connected to the vision.

Your Turn: When a Vision Becomes a World

At the heart of Your Turn is a grounded, character-driven story about two lifelong friends facing financial hardship and the increasingly complicated consequences of their decisions.

Although crime plays an important role in the story, Bohdan’s creative interest goes much deeper. The film explores friendship, responsibility, masculinity, mistakes, and the difficult choices people make when circumstances begin closing in around them. Rather than viewing its characters simply as good or bad, Your Turn looks at them as human beings trying to navigate difficult circumstances and determine who they ultimately want to become.

That humanity is also reflected in the film’s visual identity.

Bohdan wanted Your Turn to feel grounded and honest, choosing real Southern California locations — including restaurants, bars, motels, liquor stores, pawn shops, and quiet streets — rather than relying on glamorous environments or overly polished settings. His goal was not to make these places look like something they are not, but to recognize the cinematic possibilities already within them.

It is an approach that reveals a great deal about how Bohdan sees the world.

A motel room can be cinematic. A roadside business can be cinematic. A restaurant back alley can be cinematic. An ordinary street can become memorable when something emotionally significant is happening there.

For Bohdan, cinematography is ultimately about finding beauty in places and moments people may normally overlook and then discovering the technical and artistic language needed to preserve that feeling on screen.

That philosophy gives Your Turn a visual foundation rooted in authenticity rather than artificial perfection. The film is designed to feel lived-in because the world surrounding its characters matters.

Most importantly, Your Turn gave Bohdan the opportunity to take that visual philosophy beyond cinematography and into the larger creative responsibility of directing a feature film.

The Power of Collaboration

Bohdan’s work as an interdisciplinary artist — Director | DP | Gaffer | Colorist | Photography — gives him an unusually broad understanding of the filmmaking process. But his greatest strength may be his ability to recognize that filmmaking is ultimately about people.

He believes strongly in communication before stepping onto the set. For Bohdan, taking the time to make sure everyone understands the creative idea — and, just as importantly, why the idea matters creates an environment where people can make better decisions independently. Rather than simply asking people to complete their individual responsibilities, Bohdan wants them to understand the larger picture. That philosophy continues after the cameras stop rolling. He shares color-graded stills and dailies with cast and crew at the end of each shooting day, allowing everyone involved to see what they are actually creating and understand how their individual work fits into the film.It is a simple but powerful expression of his belief in shared ownership.

People work incredibly hard on a film, and Bohdan believes they deserve to see the bigger picture — to know that their contribution matters and that they are helping create something rather than simply completing a job. That collaborative spirit is particularly meaningful on Your Turn, a film that itself represents the power of people believing in an idea and helping it grow.

Bohdan’s work shows he is ultimately driven by a desire to make audiences feel something real. He does not need extraordinary locations to create extraordinary images. He looks for beauty in the familiar, emotion in the everyday, and cinematic possibility in the world that already exists around us. With Your Turn, all of those instincts converge.

As Your Turn moves through post-production, Bohdan stands at an exciting new chapter as a feature director, while continuing to bring the perspective of a cinematographer, gaffer, colorist, and photographer to every frame.
