Dr. Kenyon Glover: Turning Pain, Purpose and Faith Into a Message of Transformation
Dr. Kenyon Glover has lived through a journey marked by athletic achievement, acting, public speaking, ministry, personal struggle, and profound transformation. A former NBA guard and actor who has gone on to become a public speaker and author, Kenyon is now using his experiences to encourage others to find faith, purpose, courage, and strength in the midst of difficult seasons. Through his books, Faithful & Focused and The Rebirth and Resurrection of a New Man, Kenyon explores themes of faith, identity, transformation, personal growth, and the power of continuing forward when life feels overwhelming. At the heart of his work is a deeply personal story of surviving depression and suicidal thoughts and choosing to use that experience as a source of encouragement for others.
From Deep Pain to a Purposeful Message
For Kenyon, writing his books was not simply a creative endeavor. It was born from some of the darkest moments of his life and a desire to help others who may find themselves facing similar struggles.
“I have experienced some very deep depression and was committed to a mental hospital for attempting suicide on my life on quite a few attempts. God spared my life for a reason. And that reason is to keep me here to share my story with others that may go through that same suffering, that dark place, that spirit of depression and having suicidal thoughts.”
Kenyon says his goal is to transform his experience into something that can impact, encourage, and motivate someone else who may be struggling.
“I want my story to impact, encourage and motivate someone else. I want them to develop the courage to know that they too can push through the pain despite how their life may look at the moment. This is what inspired me to put those messages into books. I will never allow shame to keep me silent and stagnant. God chose me to use my story to help someone else get through theirs.”
That willingness to be transparent about his past is central to Kenyon’s message. Rather than allowing difficult experiences to define him, he has chosen to view them as part of a larger journey toward purpose.
His varied professional background has also played a major role in shaping his perspective as a writer. Kenyon describes his years as an athlete, actor, speaker, and author as connected chapters rather than unrelated careers.
“Every chapter of my life has shaped me in a different way, and I believe none of those chapters happened by accident. Being a former NBA guard taught me discipline, resilience, teamwork, and what it means to keep moving forward even when things don’t go according to plan. Basketball taught me that talent may open a door, but commitment, preparation, and perseverance are what allow you to walk through it.”
Acting brought another dimension to his understanding of people and their experiences.
“Acting taught me another valuable lesson: the importance of understanding people and their stories. As an actor, I learned how to step into different perspectives, emotions, and experiences. That ability has carried over into my writing because I don’t simply want to write words—I want my readers to see themselves in the words. I want them to feel understood, encouraged, and reminded that their story still has value.”
Public speaking, meanwhile, gave Kenyon an opportunity to turn those experiences into a message for others.
“Public speaking gave me the opportunity to take those experiences and turn them into a message. Standing in front of people taught me that my voice is not just for me. It’s a responsibility. If something I’ve experienced can give another person hope, courage, or the strength to keep going, then I believe I have an obligation to share it.”
Faith, Focus and the Courage to Keep Going
The philosophy behind Faithful & Focused is rooted in Kenyon’s belief that faith and purpose must work together. To him, being faithful means remaining true to who God created you to be, while being focused means using the gifts and talents God has given you.
“From the beginning to when I started this journey and God gave me the vision of Faithful & Focused which means being Faithful to who God created you to be and Focused on using the gifts and talents that He has given you. And to expand on that even more, being Faithful & Focused means trusting God even when you cannot see the entire path ahead, while remaining committed to the purpose He has placed within you. Faith gives you the courage to keep moving, and focus gives you the discipline not to allow distractions, setbacks, or difficult seasons to pull you away from what God has called you to do.”
Kenyon acknowledges that faith does not eliminate uncertainty or difficult seasons. Instead, he believes faith provides the courage to continue despite them.
“There have been moments in my life when I questioned the timing, the process, and even myself. But I learned that just because you cannot see what God is doing does not mean He isn’t working. Sometimes faith means taking the next step without having all the answers. Sometimes focus means continuing to move forward when everything around you is telling you to quit.”
For Kenyon, perseverance is not dependent on an easy journey.
“Being faithful doesn’t mean life will always be easy. Being focused doesn’t mean you will never become discouraged. It means that when you fall, you get back up; when you face obstacles, you keep believing; and when the journey takes longer than expected, you remain committed to the destination.”
He also believes that difficult experiences can ultimately become part of a person’s preparation.
“I believe our purpose is bigger than our comfort. God can use every chapter of our lives—the victories, disappointments, mistakes, challenges, and moments of uncertainty—to prepare us for where He is taking us. What we may see as a setback can become preparation. What we may see as a closed door can become redirection. And what we may think is the end can actually be the beginning of something greater.”
That philosophy is ultimately what the title Faithful & Focused represents to Kenyon.
“So, Faithful & Focused is more than a name to me. It is a way of living. It is a reminder that I don’t have to understand everything to trust God, and I don’t have to see the entire road to take the next step.”
His encouragement to others is direct:
“My encouragement to you is simple: Stay faithful to God, stay focused on your purpose, and don’t allow temporary circumstances to make you abandon a permanent calling. Your journey may not look the way you imagined, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t leading somewhere meaningful.
Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep growing. Keep moving.
Because when faith and focus work together, you discover that what God has placed inside of you is greater than anything standing in your way.”
Turning Every Chapter Into a Message of Hope
Kenyon identifies fear as one of the greatest barriers standing between people and the lives they were created to live. Fear of failure, rejection, judgment, and leaving one’s comfort zone can prevent people from pursuing their purpose.
“I believe the biggest obstacle preventing people from becoming the person they were created or called to be is fear—fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of what people will think, and sometimes even fear of stepping outside of their comfort zone. Too many people allow their past experiences, disappointments, mistakes, and the opinions of others to convince them that they are not capable of becoming who God called them to be.”
He believes people can become so focused on their past that they lose sight of what may still be ahead.
“I believe we often spend so much time looking at where we’ve been that we lose sight of where God is taking us. Your past may be a part of your story, but it does not have to define your future. Sometimes the greatest battle is not with the circumstances around us, but with the limitations we place on ourselves.”
Kenyon says purpose requires faith, courage, discipline, and a willingness to continue even when the path ahead is unclear.
“I’ve learned that purpose requires faith, courage, discipline, and the willingness to keep moving even when you cannot see the entire path. God doesn’t always give us the whole blueprint; sometimes He simply gives us the next step.”
His message to those struggling to become who they were created to be is straightforward.
“My message to anyone struggling to become who they were created to be is simple: Stop allowing fear to make decisions that faith was supposed to make. Believe that there is more inside of you. Trust God with your journey. Keep growing, keep learning, keep showing up, and don’t allow temporary setbacks to make you abandon a permanent calling.
You were created with purpose. You were given gifts for a reason. And sometimes becoming who God
