Navigating Office Tension and Old Flames: Katricia Coco Kariuki Talks Workplace Rom-Com Chemistry in After Us

Transitioning from the harrowing survival stakes of a post-apocalyptic wasteland to the snappy, unpredictable humor of a romantic comedy requires an entirely different kind of gear-shifting. Yet, Katricia Coco Kariuki makes that creative leap look effortless. In After Us, Coco steps into the shoes of Theresa, a character caught in the hilariously agonizing crossfire of past history and present-day professional obligation.

In a candid interview discussing the film, Coco breaks down the secret sauce of workplace rom-coms, the fun of balancing heavy emotions with sharp comedic timing, and why the undeniable chemistry with her co-star made every single take an absolute blast.

Unpacking the Rich History of Cameron and Theresa

Every great romantic comedy needs a compelling hook, and for After Us, the narrative engine runs on unresolved history. When asked what first drew her to the script, Coco points straight to the central relationship. “The dynamic between Cameron and Theresa,” Coco notes. “There’s real history between them, and getting to explore two people forced to work together again after everything that’s happened felt like a rich story to tell.”

Playing Theresa meant navigating a tightrope walk of contrasting professional and personal demands. “Theresa has to hold her professionalism and her personal history in the same room, often at the same time,” Coco explains. “Balancing that push and pull was the most enjoyable part of playing her.”

That push and pull also required a delicate blend of tones. Unlike straight dramas or broad comedies, this project demanded precision. “The comedic timing required alongside the emotional weight of an ex-relationship,” says Coco, was especially distinct from past work. “It’s a rom-com, so the humor had to land even in scenes carrying real tension.”

Behind-the-Scenes Laughs and On-Screen Sparks

A workplace rom-com sinks or swims based on the rapport between its leads. Fortunately, the magic wasn’t just limited to the script—it translated instantly onto the set. “The chemistry with my scene partner,” Coco highlights as her favorite part of the process. “A workplace rom-com lives or dies on that dynamic, and finding it in real time was the most fun part of the process.”

That intense focus on screen often yielded immediate comic relief the second the director yelled cut. Sharing a glimpse behind the curtain, Coco reveals, “Cameron and I kept laughing between takes in the office scene. The tension between Cameron and Theresa is so deliberate on screen that the second we cut, all that seriousness just fell apart into laughter.”

Why Viewers Will Fall in Love with After Us

When looking ahead to the film’s release, Coco knows exactly what is going to resonate most with viewers. It is the delicious agony of watching professionals completely lose their cool.

“Watching two people who know each other’s history try to keep things professional, and failing in the funniest and most honest ways,” Coco predicts, is what audiences are going to love most. It’s messy, it’s relatable, and it showcases a vibrant, comedic side of Coco’s incredible range.
