“Backlash,” a Ravenswoods Films award-winning production written by Jon Cohen and Caleb Tumanako, plunges viewers into a terrifying world where online actions have deadly real-world consequences. The film distributed by Uncork’d Entertainment, this action-horror-thriller takes a dark and suspenseful turn, exploring the themes of cyberbullying and its devastating impact. The film is brought to life by a talented cast and crew, guided by the vision of multi-award-winning director Jon Cohen. With numerous honors in the film festival circuit, the film has won award titles including Best Feature, Best Director, and “Best Twist.” “Backlash” is a cinematic experience that will leave you on the edge of your seat!
From High School Fun to Real-World Deathmatch

“Backlash” starts off with a seemingly normal high school setting, introducing us to a group of teenage online gamers who are enjoying their youth and the virtual gaming world. As they engage in their favorite game, they cross a line when they cyberbully a classmate, leading to tragic consequences in real time.

The film shifts gears dramatically, transforming into a suspenseful thriller. The teenagers find themselves kidnapped by a masked killer and thrust into a real-life deathmatch, mirroring the violent game they so casually played online.

The stark contrast between the virtual world they knew and the brutal reality they now face is jarring. As they are forced to kill or be killed, they quickly discover that the consequences of their actions are far more painful and permanent than anything they experienced in the digital realm.

The Creative Minds Behind the Film

Directed by Jon Cohen, a 43-time award-winning director, writer, and producer, along with co-writer Caleb Tumanako. The film also has a team of dedicated producers, including Damien England, Tara Jay, Marvin Maddicks Jr., and David Steinhoff.
The film’s chilling music is composed by Victor Spiegel, whose music amplifies the suspense and tension throughout the film. Boo Stojanovic, the costume designer, skillfully captures the essence of high school life and youth culture through the characters’ clothing.

Director’s Insight: The Inspiration Behind the Story

Director Jon Cohen shared his inspiration for “Backlash,” saying, “School is tough for everyone, and while I went through a lot of bullying (being an Australian in an English boarding school), social media didn’t exist back then, but nowadays, it’s inescapable, and the bullies can hide behind screens and not have to truly face the result of their words.”
Cohen’s personal experiences with bullying, combined with the rise of social media and cyberbullying, served as the catalyst for creating a film that explores the consequences of online actions and the importance of empathy.

Elke Hinrichsen (Marnie) described the location as “incredible—atmospheric in a way that really added to the story.” Elke also highlighted the close-knit team, which helped them navigate the intensity of the fast-paced schedule. Over time, the cast felt like family, which made everything feel more real and helped Hinrichsen shape her portrayal of Marnie.
Alyson Rudlin (JJ) shared her experience preparing for the role of a visually impaired teenager in a terrifying environment. She wore semi-opaque contact lenses, which had a significant impact on her performance. She realized that crying or even moving her eyes when emotional was different with contacts in.
Addressing Cyberbullying
The actors in “Backlash” also commented on the film’s exploration of cyberbullying.
Elke Hinrichsen (Marnie) emphasized the importance of the conversation surrounding cyberbullying: “Cyberbullying is something that can feel inescapable, and I think that’s an important conversation. It’s easy to forget there’s a real person on the other side of the screen, and this story really taps into the weight of that.”
Lexie Rose (Aly) added, “During a time and age where phones and social media are so integrated in young people’s lives, a discussion around media safety is so important.”
Performing Stunts and Fight Scenes

Jock Campbell (Joe) praised Lexie (Aly) for her performance in her first fight scene, noting her trust and ability to nail the choreography.
Alyson Rudlin (JJ) confirmed that she performed her own stunts and fight scenes, collaborating with Jock, the director JD, and the stunt team from Twinstar Stunts to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort during the violent scenes.
Gordon Vignelles (Will) said that this film goes to the extremes of cyberbullying; sometimes you need a message like that to reach a wider audience.
Riley Klotz (Frankie) expressed hope that the film would encourage viewers to reflect on the real-world repercussions of bullying and work to prevent it.
