Hollywood Theater: Amy Julia Rose Shares Upcoming Play “Are You Made At Me?” Starring Actress Alice Kidman!

Avatar

Mark your calendars! On Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 6:30 PM, the Stella Adler Theatre in Hollywood will host a staged reading of “Are You Mad At Me?”, a collection of five original plays written by Amy Julia Rose, starring LA-based actress Alice Kidman.

Amy Julia Rose on Her Upcoming Plays

We had the chance to ask Amy Julia Rose to delve deeper into what audiences can expect from “Are You Mad At Me?” – “My show is called Are You Mad At Me? It is a staged reading of five of my original one-act plays: Calm Down, I Don’t Like Haikus, Young Picasso And His Mother, Simran, and Commandments.”

Let’s take a quick look at the plays:

  • Calm Down: A comedic scene unfolding in a car as one cousin drives another to a comic convention.
  • I Don’t Like Haikus:  Two new roommates on college move-in day, one only speaks in haikus, and the other tries to get her to stop.
  • Young Picasso and His Mother: A mother attempts to convince her son that he is Picasso’s reincarnation, with surprising consequences.
  • Simran: A girl who finds it impossible to stop thinking of a loved one when everyone else seems to have moved on
  • Commandments: A farce that shows what happens when a fight breaks out between grandparents in the middle of their granddaughter’s bat mitzvah.

Amy emphasized, “These plays are all very funny, and I know that there will be lots of laughter from the audience!”

Alice Kidman Taking the Stage:

Alice Kidman will be embodying four unique and contrasting characters. We asked her to share more about her roles:

“The four characters I play are all completely different in personality! Ranging from a crazy obsessed stalker friend to a 6-year-old with an attitude! They all have very eccentric personalities and you can’t help but like them all. Even Andie who is definitely hard to deal with. Amy’s creativity is showcased in her ability to be so versatile when writing. You get to see inside her mind just a little bit more with each character.“

Amy Julia Rose: The Muse Behind

We were curious to learn about the inspiration behind Amy’s writing:

“My inspiration comes from a mixture of everyday life and imagination. As an actor, I’ve always loved creating characters and coming up with their ways of thinking and speaking. My favorite kinds of scenes to write involve characters who speak differently from each other.” Amy continued, “I love voices and language, so when I come across someone in real life who has an interesting way of speaking or phrasing words, I’ll take a mental picture of it and turn it into a character. The main thing that ties everything together is humor. I have always been inspired by funny plots and scenes, and I make sure to include comic relief in everything I write, because I love to laugh and I know others do too!“

Bringing the Characters to Life: Rehearsal Insights

With theatrical plays often known for their fast-paced nature, we asked Alice about her rehearsal experience:

“Energy energy energy. Pushing myself to go bigger and commit more to finding the size of these characters. That’s the beauty of acting. Getting to express yourself fully through the vessel of a character. Through rehearsal you can find their true size, the constant repetition will bring it out of you and you will know when you have brought them to life fully.”

Casting Perfection: Amy on Choosing Alice

Amy shared her thoughts on casting Alice in the roles:

“Alice plays four characters: Megan, a 6-year-old little sister; Vera, the annoyed roommate of the haiku girl; Andie, a mom who loves to cause drama; and Dawn, an opinionated girl whose friends avoid confiding in her. These roles all required a great sense of comedic timing, the ability to find meaning in emotions, and a clear switch between thoughts.” Amy concluded, “I could not have chosen a better actor for these roles – I’ve seen Alice perform many different characters and styles, and I knew immediately that she would do a wonderful job. She clearly puts her whole heart in these characters and really makes them come alive. Alice exceeded my expectations, and I’m very lucky to have her in my cast!“

Don’t Miss Out!

Prepare for an evening of laughter! Be sure to catch “Are You Mad At Me?” on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 6:30 PM at the Stella Adler Theatre located: at 6773 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028.
