Where are you originally from, and where are you based now?

Genel Mejia – A: I’m originally from Mexico, from a very small town, and I now live in Walnut Creek, California.
Q: What kinds of stories or film genres are you most drawn to creating?

Genel Mejia – A: My favorite genres are horror, surreal, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and silent films. My last two movies are mostly surreal and mystery, along with horror, with a touch of romanticism and poetry. That’s what I tend to enjoy creating the most.

Q: What motivates you to keep pushing yourself creatively and professionally?

Genel Mejia – A: Nostalgia and nature! Being surrounded by nature is definitely the best dose of joy for the brain and soul, along with reading poetry by Rainer Maria Rilke and listening to classical music by Richard Wagner to keep me going. That motivates me and gets my creativity flowing.
Q: Can you share any recent projects you’ve wrapped or anything upcoming you’re excited about?

Genel Mejia – A: At the moment, I’m working on a project called MUSE BEHIND THE SCENES, which is about the making of my first feature film that was released last year. Also, one of the most exciting things right now is attending film festivals and seeing beautiful films from other creative minds and directors. It’s very inspiring to see and meet other artists and creative minds.

Q: What do you hope audiences take away from your work?
Genel Mejia – A: I want my audience to take an escape from reality into a fantasy surreal world. I love to make my audience think through the visuals I present on the big screen and have them feel like they are trapped in a dream—an adventure, a crazy fun ride!
Q: How would you describe your filmmaking style or creative vision?

Genel Mejia – A: I think my style of filmmaking is very visual. I feel that visual storytelling has no frontiers and can speak to a bigger audience around the world. Don’t get me wrong, words are beautiful and very important depending on the subject you want to tell. My movies are also very surreal, avant-garde, and strange, with a touch of romanticism and poetic elements, while also embracing a Gothic feel.
