Q & A with Actor Tyler Delaney

Q: Tyler, you’ve starred in many TV & Film projects! What is your favorite part about acting?
Tyler Delaney – A: There are so many components of a performance I’m obsessed with. But if I had to become specific, I’d say it winds down with two aspects. The first is the joy of creating a character. Picking up a script for the first time and seeing where my character is in a story is beyond exciting. I’m fascinated with all of the nuances of a character, which usually comes from the parts of a script where there are no spoken lines. A good script will always give you the tools to understand who you’re playing; finding those telltale signs can be exhilarating. But the rehearsal is always a rewarding experience as well. Discovering a character’s habits or maybe ticks can be so fun, and then trimming the parts that are not needed feels like sculpting in a way.
The second aspect is being on set. Knowing that the entire crew is there and the camera is rolling, it’s a different feeling. It also calls into play how prepared you are since there is no time for last-minute prep. It plays into the phrase ‘game time.’
Q: Who are your favorite filmmakers?
Tyler Delaney- A: Too many names to state! However, some would have to be Steven Spielberg, Gore Verbenski, and Paul Thomas Anderson. I’ve always felt that with Steven Spielberg, you have a sort of dual experience: yes, you have an adventure in most of his films, whether it be monstrous sharks, aliens, or maybe rampaging dinosaurs, but there’s a straightforward and relatable story at the heart of all of his movies. I have always found it fascinating that E.T. isn’t just about a boy and his alien but a child who is uniquely coming to terms with divorce.
Gore Verbinski may be one of the most talented artists who creates an atmosphere. He manages to set a palpable tone: Whenever I watch The Ring, I get shivers from the first five minutes that slowly transform into a broader feeling until it reaches a climax near the end.
Paul Thomas Anderson has such an understanding of human behavior in just about all of his films. He manages to show the most eccentric yet believable characters I’ve ever seen on the screen. His characters in The Master are so ridiculous in their behavior and beliefs, yet I can’t help but understand their actions. Also, when I watch the tension between so many of the characters in There Will Be Blood, you—in a sense—immediately recognize just why each feels the way they do. Only a complete master could create that kind of series of layers.
Q: What would you say is one thing that drives you to be at your best as an actor?
Tyler Delaney – A: I think what drives me most is to be as honest an artist as possible. We’re taught as actors to be authentic, and I take that phrase to heart. Not just in how I express myself when performing but in how I listen to the character I play. I have to ensure I’m being truthful to them, how I’m playing the role, and that I’m not adding anything unnecessary. Of course, just as important is that I have to ensure that I’m being truthful to the director’s vision. It’s arguably the most significant responsibility of an actor to make sure what you do serves not just the story but the filmmaker’s mission.
Q: Can you share with us any film new projects you’re working on?
Tyler Delaney – A: The series: ‘Story Time With Gambit and Rogue’ is in post-production. It’s a project that I’m proud of; such a fun experience with a dedicated director and crew that gives a unique look at superheroes from a more personal perspective. I’ve just finished filming two films back to back. The first film is ‘Maid Droid: Origins’. It was such an exhilarating experience. It is also a good story wrapped in a psychological thriller. ‘Feral’ is another thriller with quite a few twists that I feel audiences will love.
