Q & A with Jarrell Pyro Johnson

Q. Jarrell, can you give us an update on your most recent film project ?
Jarrell Pyro Johnson: I’m thrilled to announce that I just wrapped filming on my most ambitious project yet, “Dinner with the God of War.” We’re now in post-production, and I couldn’t be more excited! The entire journey—from the incredible work of our dedicated crew to the stellar performances by every actor involved—has been truly momentous.
But even with “Dinner with the God of War” nearing completion, I’m already diving headfirst into my next exciting venture: ‘Thaddeus’. This film marks a new chapter for me, as I’m creating my first original cast of characters and exploring deeply personal themes. The cast is fantastic, featuring a mix of seasoned actors and exciting newcomers like Searen Wilson and Barry Johnson III. The script, which was adapted from my story by my talented friend and writer J. Tyler Pennington, tells a powerful story about a Black superhero and tackles important political and racial themes. The goal of ‘Thaddeus’ is to create a space where these issues are discussed openly and honestly, helping us confront the trauma and fear associated with them.
Q. What would you say drew you most to your character in the film and the overall project?
Jarrell Pyro Johnson: That’s a great question! I’m really drawn to the character’s journey of self-discovery and how he navigates the challenges of being a Black superhero in a world that often doesn’t understand or accept his abilities. He’s grappling with a lot of internal conflict, trying to reconcile his personal struggles with his responsibility to use his powers for good. What makes it even more complex is that he’s also dealing with a sense of internalized racism and the societal pressures he faces within his own community. He has to grapple with the prejudice and negativity he encounters from other Black people, who may not accept him or his unique abilities. This is a complex and often overlooked aspect of the Black experience, and I wanted to explore it in the film to shed light on the internalized shame and rejection that some Black people experience.
I also love the film’s focus on tackling important social issues in a way that’s both thought-provoking and entertaining. We’re trying to create a space where audiences can engage with these themes in a meaningful way, and I believe that’s crucial in today’s world. Ultimately, I think *Thaddeus* has the potential to be a film that sparks important conversations and makes a real difference. The only thing I regret is that it’s currently a short film and not a feature yet. But I’m hoping to get it picked up and turned into a feature soon!
Q: What would you say is the one thing that has helped you the most gain success as an actor in the film industry?
Jarrell Pyro Johnson: It’s hard to pinpoint just one thing, as success in acting is a combination of many factors. But if I had to choose, I’d say the most impactful element has been a relentless pursuit of self-improvement and a constant drive to learn and grow.
Here’s why I think it’s so crucial:
* **Staying Relevant:** The film industry is constantly evolving, so staying on top of your game means constantly honing your craft. Whether it’s taking acting classes, exploring new genres, or working with different directors, the pursuit of growth keeps you fresh and adaptable.
* **Building Confidence:** The more you learn and push yourself, the more confident you become in your abilities. Confidence is essential in auditions, on set, and when facing challenges in the industry.
* **Networking and Collaboration:** The act of constantly learning often leads you to connect with talented individuals, whether it’s fellow actors, directors, or other professionals in the field. These relationships can be invaluable for career advancement.
* **Resilience:** The film industry is notoriously competitive. Having a strong work ethic and a commitment to continuous growth helps you weather rejection and setbacks and ultimately fuels your passion for the craft.
Ultimately, success in acting comes down to a combination of talent, passion, dedication, and a willingness to embrace challenges and growth. It’s a journey that never truly ends, and I’m constantly striving to learn and improve.
