Mitch Alcala Explores the Connection Between Acting and Screenwriting, Bringing Characters to Life on Both Sides of the Camera

Actor and emerging screenwriter Mitch Alcala is entering an exciting new chapter in his entertainment career, balancing a growing list of acting projects with an expanding interest in storytelling behind the scenes. With several productions in development and others already wrapped but still under wraps, Mitch continues to build momentum in Hollywood while exploring another dimension of his creativity: screenwriting.

Known for his ability to portray complex personalities across film, television, and digital productions, Mitch has developed an approach to acting that goes beyond memorizing dialogue. For him, understanding a character’s psychology, motivations, and personal history is essential to delivering a convincing performance. Now, those same instincts are influencing his approach to writing, allowing him to explore storytelling from both sides of the script.

In a recent exclusive interview, Mitch offered insight into his creative process, explaining how years of stepping into different characters have shaped his understanding of dialogue, human behavior, and the art of developing compelling stories.

From San Diego to Hollywood: Building a Career Across Film and Television

Originally from San Diego, California, Mitch Alcala began pursuing acting professionally in 2008, developing his skills through theater, improvisation, independent films, and on-camera training before eventually relocating to Los Angeles.

Throughout his career, Mitch has demonstrated versatility across multiple genres, taking on roles ranging from emotionally complicated individuals to villains, antiheroes, and unconventional personalities.

His growing filmography includes Know Mercy (2025), in which he portrayed Caleb, and Epic REDD Recordz (2026), where he appeared as Detective Smith. He returned to the role in Epic Redd Recordz 2, further expanding his screen credits.

Mitch has also appeared in a variety of vertical drama productions, including My Vampire Bodyguard, Traded to the Shadow Heir, The Alpha Queen Returns, and My Ex-Wife Is a Superwoman. His work across these productions reflects his adaptability as an actor working in both traditional and emerging viral entertainment formats.  IMDB

While audiences have already seen Mitch in numerous productions, there is more happening behind the scenes.

The actor currently has additional projects in the works, including productions he has already completed filming. However, certain details remain confidential, with official announcements expected when the projects are ready to be publicly revealed.

For Mitch, the ongoing activity represents another stage in a career built through persistence, continuous development, and a willingness to explore new creative opportunities.

Beyond Acting: Mitch Alcala Reveals How Understanding Characters Inspires His Screenwriting

As Mitch continues expanding his acting career, he is also applying his experience in front of the camera to the creative process of screenwriting.

For many performers, the script serves as the foundation for building a character. Mitch approaches that relationship from both directions, recognizing that the psychological work required to portray a character can also become a valuable tool when developing one on the page.

During his recent interview, Mitch explained that acting and screenwriting share an essential creative foundation: understanding what motivates people.

“Being an actor, we are always creating a backstory,” Mitch explained. “Like, what does the character want in the scene?”

He continued by emphasizing that writing scenes and dialogue involves the same kind of character exploration that actors regularly undertake when preparing for a performance.

For Mitch, dialogue is more than a collection of words exchanged between characters. The way someone communicates can reveal their personality, emotional state, intentions, and underlying motivations.

“The things that people say say a lot about who we are as a person,” he shared.

This perspective gives Mitch an interesting advantage as he develops his writing abilities. Rather than approaching a character solely through the events of a story, he considers the individual behind those events.

When discussing how he develops characters, Mitch explained, “I build a character based on an actor’s psychological perspective.”

His approach centers on creating believable individuals whose actions and decisions are informed by an established personal history.

Mitch also believes that a character’s backstory provides a consistent foundation, regardless of how the surrounding narrative unfolds.

“A background of a character would always be the same, no matter the plot,” he explained. “Since I create the backstory of the character, it’s a lot easier to perform it.”

This connection between writing and performing highlights how closely the two disciplines can complement each other. An actor who understands a character’s internal world may discover new ways to communicate that understanding through a screenplay, while writing can encourage an even deeper examination of the choices that shape a performance.

For Mitch, the transition into screenwriting is less about abandoning one creative discipline for another and more about using his existing experience to strengthen his storytelling.

New Acting Projects, Untold Stories, and a Creative Future Full of Possibilities

With additional acting projects underway and several completed productions awaiting further announcements, Mitch Alcala is continuing to move forward professionally while developing his voice as a storyteller.

His experience portraying different personalities has encouraged him to examine human behavior beyond what audiences see on screen.

As Mitch explained during the interview, actors are expected to understand people and recognize the experiences, motivations, and characteristics that make each individual unique.

“Actors are supposed to understand people, what makes a person who they are,” Mitch shared. “Once I understand what kind of person they are, I can write it.”

That philosophy speaks to the foundation of his creative ambitions.

Whether preparing for an audition, developing a character, or approaching a new screenplay, Mitch sees storytelling as an opportunity to understand people on a deeper level. His perspective also reflects the importance of authenticity in entertainment. While a compelling plot can capture an audience’s attention, believable characters are often what make a story memorable. For Mitch, developing those characters begins long before the camera starts rolling or the first line of dialogue is delivered. It begins with understanding who they are, what they want, and why they make the choices they do.

As his career continues to evolve, Mitch is positioning himself to explore opportunities both in front of the camera and through his own writing. His growing list of credits, ongoing productions, and interest in character-driven storytelling suggest an artist eager to keep expanding his creative range.

Although details surrounding some of his latest acting projects cannot yet be disclosed, audiences can anticipate learning more as official announcements become available.

For Mitch Alcala, the next chapter is not simply about playing new characters. It is also about discovering the stories behind them and exploring what happens when an actor begins creating those worlds himself. Follow Mitch Alcala for upcoming project announcements, career news, and the latest additions to his filmography.
