Q & A with Darrell Terrell

Being an actor for 8+ years, what is one of the most important things that you’ve learned on your journey that you never knew when you started out?
Darrell Terrell: One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as an actor is that when you first enter this industry, you are essentially on your own. What does that mean? It means you need to ensure that you have the right headshots, resume, and demo reel to start. However, building your resume requires gaining experience in films, particularly through speaking roles rather than just background work. Your experience is assessed based on your performance on screen, and once you secure that opportunity, you can enhance your resume and create a demo reel that captures the attention of agents, casting directors, and filmmakers.
Additionally, it’s crucial to maintain a positive mindset during the initial dry spells of your career. These phases can take a mental toll, but I firmly believe in the power of prayer and hard work. Enrolling in acting classes can help you refine your craft, and over time, you will develop the skills that make you a better artist. While it may take some time, your dedication and talent will ultimately lead to better opportunities.
What is your favorite part or the first thing that you do when taking on a new role?
Darrell Terrell: My favorite aspect of taking on a new role is discovering who the character is, what traits they possess, and their role within the script.
When I start with a new character, I enjoy delving into the script to explore the interactions between characters. Once I have a good grasp of that, I spend time in a quiet space to concentrate on my character and rehearse my lines. Finally, my wife, Jamie, and I go through everything together until I know the script word for word.
As a top-level bodybuilder and current fitness coach, would you say your background has helped you in the entertainment industry and how?
Darrell Terrell: Being a bodybuilder and personal trainer has significantly contributed to my growth as an actor. I strongly believe in discipline, hard work, and eliminating anything that hinders my journey toward success. There have been moments when certain bad habits held me back from becoming the best version of myself. So, I made the decision to let them go, including cutting out junk food. In acting, it’s essential to perform at the highest level, which requires a strong focus on your goals and objectives.
What helps you stay grounded?
Darrell Terrell: What keeps me focused is prayer, faith in God, and discipline. These are fundamental to nurturing my wonderful marriage and aspiring for a successful acting career. I remain committed to these guiding principles. I have a wife who has faith in my ability, and I believe it’s important to use our resources wisely. Rather than pursuing a dream half-heartedly, I prefer to give 100% and strive to be the best actor I can be in pursuit of success.
Any projects we can talk about?
Darrell Terrell: I just wrapped up filming “CULPA,” directed by Jaden Besteda. The story revolves around two individuals grappling with a tragic night, with one of them convinced that karma is coming for him. I had an absolute blast on set, especially since I got to bring humor to the film. Watching everyone laugh truly made my day.
My next project is “Bullets of a Thousand Fates,” directed by Derin Caglar. It explores the story of two skilled hitmen who are compelled to play Russian Roulette by their organization. I’m incredibly excited about this project; it’s going to be fantastic. Plus, what could be more thrilling than playing the role of a hitman?
What are you looking forward to now in your career?
Darrell Terrell: At this stage in my career, I’m eagerly anticipating that breakthrough moment. I frequently pray to God for guidance and success in my journey. I aspire to be part of a TV show or a major film.
I truly believe that it will happen, but I know I need to stay focused and keep putting in the work where I am. God’s timing is always perfect, and to turn big dreams into reality, you must be prepared to seize the opportunity when it arises. That way, you’ll be ready when the moment comes.
Do you have any quotes that you live by?
Darrell Terrell: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you’re doing, you will be successful.” -Albert Schweitzer
