Q & A with Actress Dilara Foscht

Q. Can you share the latest about your upcoming film?
Dilara Foscht: The latest project I had the honor to act in is an independent feature film by award-winning director Wayne Wapeemukwa. Wayne won TIFF’s “Best First Feature” award in 2017, and he’s simply an all-around amazing director. I was cast as a supporting lead in this art house drama, and to be honest, it was one of the best set experiences I’ve had so far. Since the movie is still in post-production, I can’t share too much about the plot yet, but I can say it’s a hauntingly real story about white supremacy in today’s world. The plot revolves around two boys striving to find their place in society.
Q. How would you explain your character, and did you do anything special to prepare for this role?
Dilara Foscht: Oh, yes. There was a lot I did to prepare for this character. Given the plot’s heavy, dark, and realistic themes, I needed to do significant research to understand the world we’re portraying. Essentially, it’s our real world—but seen through the twisted lens of two young men who blame their misfortunes on society. The story deals with intense issues like mass shootings, white supremacy, and the toxicity of the internet, so there were some really dark rabbit holes I had to go down.
My character is a hitchhiker who meets the two main characters along the way, so I also did a lot of research on travel routes and destinations. It was important for me to understand her journey and experiences, as this shapes how she views the world. I’ve personally traveled a fair amount and even lived on multiple continents, but I wanted to immerse myself in each location mentioned in the script to build a vivid, sensory understanding. What I really loved about this role was how outgoing and world open she was written. It really resonated with me and it felt surprisingly easy “stepping into her shoes”.
Q. How was the casting process?
Dilara Foscht: Haha, that’s always a good question. No casting process is ever the same! Jokes aside, I feel really grateful to have been able to audition—and book a role—during a time when the industry is moving so slowly. For this role, I initially submitted a self-tape through my agent, Mo, in Vancouver. I didn’t hear back for a few weeks and naturally mentally “checked off” the audition. Then, I received a callback, which asked for an in-person audition. I flew to Vancouver just for the weekend, and the callback felt very natural and the energy was great in the room. I had a good feeling about it, but, as always, you never know until you get the final call—and thankfully, I did just a few days later.
Q. How was your experience on set?
Dilara Foscht: As I mentioned, this was one of the best set experiences I’ve had. The cast and crew were extremely talented and passionate, and everyone was genuinely committed to telling this story, going above and beyond to do it justice. Wayne (the director) and our incredible DP, Jon, both come from documentary and indie filmmaking, which showed in their dedication. As an actor, I had so much creative freedom. We were encouraged to play with lines, improvise, and fully embody our characters, which was incredibly liberating. It’s rare but so rewarding to work with a director who finds the perfect balance between giving the cast space to explore while also steering the project in the right direction.
Q. Do you have any special shout-outs?
Dilara Foscht: A huge shout-out to the entire cast and crew! My co-stars Harris, Landon, and Bianca were amazing, and since we spent a few weeks working closely together, it was wonderful to be surrounded by such talented people. Every crew member—Coby Cobra, Emilia, Aidan, Daren, our producer Nathan, and so many others—made each day feel like a vacation.
Q. Do you have any other projects in the works or recently wrapped?
Dilara Foscht: I’m currently in early development for my next feature film project, which I’m co-writing and starring in with my twin sister and filmmaking partner, Bianca Foscht. It’s a psychological thriller set in the Austrian Alps—our home country—which is opening new doors for us in international co-productions.
Q. What is something you’ve learned on your acting journey that you feel has contributed most to your success in the industry?
Dilara Foscht: I live by the belief that I learn something new every day. Staying curious always brings new discoveries. However, one thing that’s been a game-changer for me is building a positive mindset around my work and craft. This industry naturally brings a lot of “negative feelings,” like rejection and judgment, so I see no point in feeding into that. Not worrying about what others think can be incredibly liberating as well.
Moreover, I am extremely grateful to have incredible mentors and friends in my life who not only support me and my career as if it were their own, but also serve as my lighthouses in Hollywood. DP and director Michael Goi, director/writer/producer Stephen Savage, director David Joshi, DP/director Leo Behrens, producer Ilayda Centinkaya, all deserve a special mention, but of course, there are many more!
